According to the history of Punjab, the Punjabis

During the struggle for India’s freedom, Punjab
gave the country great heroes . ( ਭਾਰਤ ਦੀ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਦੇ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਨੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਮਹਾਨ ਨਾਇਕ

They included patriots such as Lala Lajpat Rai,
Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Udham Singh, Kartar Singh Sarabha and many others . ( ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਾਲਾ ਲਾਜਪਤ ਰਾਏ, ਭਗਤ ਸਿੰਘ, ਸੁਖਦੇਵ,

All these brave sons of Punjab sacrificed their

Lala Lajpat Rai died as a result of the brutal
lathi charge while he was leading a procession against the British in 1928 . ( ਲਾਲਾ ਲਾਜਪਤ ਰਾਏ ਦੀ ਮੌਤ 1928 ਵਿੱਚ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ਾਂ ਦੇ
ਖਿਲਾਫ ਇੱਕ ਜਲੂਸ ਦੀ ਅਗਵਾਈ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਬੇਰਹਿਮੀ ਨਾਲ ਲਾਠੀਚਾਰਜ ਦੇ ਨਤੀਜੇ ਵਜੋਂ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ। )
Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru were hanged for
raising their voice against the British cruelties . ( ਭਗਤ ਸਿੰਘ, ਸੁਖਦੇਵ ਅਤੇ ਰਾਜਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ਾਂ ਦੇ

Mr Mathew told Chintu, “This is the famous
Jallianwala Bagh of Amritsar and these are bullet marks . ( ਸ੍ਰੀ ਮੈਥਿਊ ਨੇ ਚਿੰਟੂ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਿਆ, “ਇਹ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ

On 13 April 1919, a crowd of around 20,000 people

The British General O’Dwyer came there with his

Then he ordered his men to start firing without

About 1000 people were killed and more than 1500
were wounded . ( ਲਗਭਗ 1000 ਲੋਕ ਮਾਰੇ ਗਏ
ਅਤੇ 1500 ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਜ਼ਖਮੀ ਹੋਏ। )
” Mr Mathew, told his students about the
partition of India in 1947 . ( ਸ੍ਰੀ

He said, “The people of Punjab suffered due to

There was a terrible bloodshed . ( ਇੱਕ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਖੂਨ-ਖਰਾਬਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ. । )
Thousands of people had to leave their homes and
live in refugee camps . ( ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ
ਘਰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਸ਼ਰਨਾਰਥੀ ਕੈਂਪਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਪਿਆ। )
However, the Punjabis worked hard and started
life afresh . ( ਪਰ, ਪੰਜਾਬੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਸਖ਼ਤ
ਮਿਹਨਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਨਵੀਂ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤੀ। )
They played a great role in rebuilding the state
. ( ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਪੁਨਰ ਨਿਰਮਾਣ ਵਿਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡੀ
ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਨਿਭਾਈ। )
They made Punjab the granary of India with their
hard work and agricultural skills . ( ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਅਤੇ ਖੇਤੀ ਹੁਨਰ ਨਾਲ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਰਤ ਦਾ ਅਨਾਜ
ਭੰਡਾਰ ਬਣਾਇਆ। )
They brought about a Green Revolution in the
country . ( ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ
ਹਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਾਂਤੀ ਲਿਆਂਦੀ। )
Soon, India became a developing country and it
was mainly due to the hard work of the Punjabis . ( ਜਲਦੀ ਹੀ, ਭਾਰਤ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਕਾਸਸ਼ੀਲ ਦੇਸ਼ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ
ਮੁੱਖ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਸਖ਼ਤ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਸੀ। )
” “Sir, wasn’t Punjab further divided when the
state of Haryana was carved out of it ?” asked Raju . ( “ਸਰ, ਜਦੋਂ ਹਰਿਆਣਾ ਸੂਬਾ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਕੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ

In 1966, the state of Punjab was reorganized on
the basis of Punjabi and Hindi languages . ( 1966 ਵਿੱਚ, ਪੰਜਾਬ ਰਾਜ ਦਾ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਅਤੇ ਹਿੰਦੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਧਾਰ 'ਤੇ
ਪੁਨਰਗਠਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। )
Some of the hilly areas of Punjab like Lahaul
Spiti, the valleys of Kullu and Manali, Kangra, Dalhousie and Shimla were
integrated with Himachal Pradesh . ( ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਕੁਝ ਪਹਾੜੀ ਖੇਤਰ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਲਾਹੌਲ ਸਪਿਤੀ, ਕੁੱਲੂ ਅਤੇ ਮਨਾਲੀ

Chandigarh was made the joint capital of both
Punjab and Haryana . ( ਚੰਡੀਗੜ੍ਹ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਅਤੇ
ਹਰਿਆਣਾ ਦੋਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਾਂਝੀ ਰਾਜਧਾਨੀ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। )
It was declared a Union Territory”, said Mr

The reorganized Punjab came into being on 1st
November 1966 . ( ਪੁਨਰਗਠਿਤ ਪੰਜਾਬ 1 ਨਵੰਬਰ
1966 ਨੂੰ ਹੋਂਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਇਆ। )
Now, it has Pakistan on the west, Jammu and
Kashmir on the north, Himachal Pradesh on the north-east and on the south it
has Haryana and Rajasthan . ( ਹੁਣ,

Its length is 518 metres and it is 9 metres broad

Its reservoir, known as Govind Sagar, stores up

Pandit Nehru called Bhakra Dam the temple of

To reach the temple, there is a 60-metre long
marble path . ( ਮੰਦਰ ਤੱਕ ਪਹੁੰਚਣ ਲਈ 60
ਮੀਟਰ ਲੰਬਾ ਸੰਗਮਰਮਰ ਦਾ ਰਸਤਾ ਹੈ। )
This path has marble railings on both the sides .

The inner walls are decorated with precious
stones . ( ਅੰਦਰਲੀਆਂ ਕੰਧਾਂ ਨੂੰ
ਕੀਮਤੀ ਪੱਥਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਜਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। )
They have on them priceless paintings and other
works of art . ( ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕੋਲ ਅਨਮੋਲ
ਚਿੱਤਰਕਾਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਕਲਾ ਦੇ ਹੋਰ ਕੰਮ ਹਨ। )
On the ground floor, under the dome-shaped roof,
lies Sri Guru Granth Sahib . ( ਹੇਠਲੀ

It is the holy book of the Sikhs,” explained Mr

ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਕਲਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ?" ਮਿਸਟਰ ਮੈਥਿਊ ਨੇ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ। )
Anandpur Sahib is another place of Sikh
pilgrimage . ( ਆਨੰਦਪੁਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਿੱਖ
ਤੀਰਥ ਸਥਾਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਸਥਾਨ ਹੈ। )
It is a small town on the left bank of the Sutlej
River . ( ਇਹ ਸਤਲੁਜ ਦਰਿਆ ਦੇ ਖੱਬੇ
ਕੰਢੇ ਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਛੋਟਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਹੈ। )
It was founded by Sri Guru Teg Bahadur . ( ਇਸ ਦੀ ਸਥਾਪਨਾ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇਗ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਕੀਤੀ
ਸੀ। )
Lakhs of Sikhs gather here annually to celebrate
the founding of the Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699 . ( 1699 ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਖਾਲਸੇ ਦੀ
ਸਥਾਪਨਾ ਦਾ ਜਸ਼ਨ ਮਨਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਹਰ ਸਾਲ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਸਿੱਖ ਇੱਥੇ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ। )

Being very close to the hills, Chandigarh has a
calm and pleasant atmosphere . (

The city was formally declared open in October
